A great down home shop where you can get all the materials and advice you need for brewing (or wine making). Griz (brewer/owner) holds court in the small main room among bulk grains and liquid yeast strains. When I visited, he quickly responded to a customer question about Steam Beer, providing a description of the unusual process while making it clear that California Common was the style and Steam was just Anchor’s name for their brew. The back rooms hold even more brewer’s goodies and of course there is a wealth of answers to their questions, novice or pro. After Steam, the discussion strayed to ciders, wild yeast and ultimately resulted in sampling a home stilled brandy. Parking is on the street and can be difficult to find. If you can’t stop by, check their web site for products and answers to brewing questions.

The gentleman who runs this place has got to have the worst attitude for running a home brew retail store. He is surly, egotistical, and completeley non helpful. He doesn't like interacting with customers. The shop is small, the ingredients were minimal and overpriced. SF brewers are better off going over to Berkeley to visit Oak Barrel. An internet web site is more helpful.

SF Brewcraft is the best. Great staff (Grizz is a San Francisco institution) good selection and good prices. Grizz and his staff are extremely friendly and always willing to answer even the most stupid questions without making you feel like an idiot. I think for a beginning and intermediate brewers SF Brewcraft is unbeatable. They have a good selection and Grizz is always willing to help with recipes and ingredient selection. They also put on semi-formal classes in both all-grain and extract brewing on a regular basis. Great shop.
