What I like about this place: good beer selection with a deliberate focus on showcasing different local breweries; the reuben was excellent.
What I did not like about this place: the menu items did not have the correct prices listed (we asked the server, who asked someone else, and we were told that the menu was just wrong and that we'd have to pay what they wanted); the food beyond the reuben is not very good; all sandwiches come with Ruffles and a little cup of coleslaw, and there's no subbing; it is SO LOUD in here.

Despite being located in Center City, just 2 blocks southeast of City Hall, McGillin’s Olde Ale House is nestled on secluded Drury Lane which seems insulated from the bustle of downtown traffic. McGillin's opened in 1860, and after over 150 years is the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia. The warm red glow of McGillin's neon sign attracts patrons like a moth to a flame. The intricate building facade is beautiful, and the windows are framed in a stylish web of woodwork. Upon entering, I see column and beam construction with superfluous pub decor, crowded table seating, and a 12-chair wooden bar on the right. There is a 2nd floor upstairs with another bar, which is open only certain days. The place seems quite popular, but I found a spot at the bar. They offer 30 taps of regional microbrews such as Yards, Stoudt’s, Flying Fish, Victory, Sly Fox and Dogfish Head. McGillin's also has three house beers: Real Ale, Genuine Lager, and the new 1860 IPA, which are all by Stoudt’s Brewery. I highly recommend the 6-beer sampler flight to try these decent beers.

Feels like you stepped through the door and were whisked away to Ireland. They have tons of local brews on tap, including two made just for them and of course the full selection of Irish and European ales. They also claim to pump out true from Ireland Guinness...

In the winter afternoons a crock of free soup awaits anyone who wants to ladle themselves a bowl. Sandwiches are always tasty and filling, nothing gourmet but all the classics. Everyone feels like friends when you are at McGillin's, not somewhere to go for a quiet drink, but the place to go to relax and laugh with friends, old and new.
