When you walk in, ya kinda wonder how the place got such a reputation. Then you look to your left and start getting a clue. After ordering food (a requirement) you begin pondering what beer(s) you’ll have with it.
One quirky aspect (among many) of the place; when you order a tap beer, they’ll pour it past the top of the glass, surface tension holding in the beer, and place it on the towel on the counter. You must then bend over and slurp the beer down to a level where you can walk to your table. OK, kinda funky but in keeping with the place. A little different but worth it.
Another quirk… you either bring your own glass, drink beer out of a paper cup, or buy one that’s for sale there (most about $3) and wash it out in the bathroom sink before getting a beer.
I gather the beers on tap are rotated weekly… one week they feature Stone, then Alesmith, then Rogue with the kicker being Sam may bring up a keg of something wonderful he squirreled away in the cooler.
They have a variety hot and cold sandwiches as well as spaghetti and such. As indicated in the name, the sandwiches are on the large size with lots of meat. My wife got a ham sandwich and I got a hot pastrami… and we shared a huge plate of Freedom Fries (cool!)
If you get a chance to talk to the owner Sam, you won’t regret it. The man knows and loves beer. He’ll bring up some goodies from the basement and offer them to you.
The Stuffed Sandwich is a cool, must-visit place… and the oddities just add to the experience. Kudos to Sam, Marlene and the crew.
