If you are ever in or passing through the Playa del Carmen area in Riviera Maya, and need a break from bland Mexican beers, or if you need a quiet, off the beaten path beer bar to belly up to and soothe your sunburn with some tasty suds, this is a must stop!

My girlfriend and I were staying just up the road at Paradisus Playa del Carmen in April 2013 and after a quick search on Beermapping.com I realized I was dead in the middle of a Mexican beer desert. One lonely beer bar popped up in the search map and boy am I happy we made the time to stop in! Club de la Cerveza doesn't open until around 4pm, but they stay open late and it makes for a great place to lounge, make friends, and drink good beers!

I had a few tasty beers from Mexico City's Tempus Cerveceria, a decent pale ale from a nearby brewery just starting up, as well as a really well done tequila barrel aged ale from Cerveza Minerva. The owner, Miguel, plays great tunes, is a great guy, and is truly a beer pioneer in the Yucatan Peninsula as he helps get better beer into the mouths of locals and tourists alike. The bar has tons of outdoor seating, and a few barstools inside the cozy little bar area.

Club de la Cerveza is the ONLY option for better beer anywhere in the area and they have 70+ beers in bottles and on draught to choose from (mostly Mexican, German, Belgian, and a few others). All of the beers we had were served in appropriate glassware which was really fantastic! They also have a small menu with bar snacks available. The other staffers are very knowledgeable, friendly, and big time beer ambassadors. Stop in for a beer and I guarantee that you wont be able to to just stay for one!

Club de la Cerveza is conveniently located on the northern end of the popular 5th Avenida between 24th and 38th street. If you are going to the 5th Avenida to shop and be touristy, I recommend starting at the southern end near the church at Ave Benito Juarez, then walking the entire stretch of 5th Avenida towards the north. Once you are all shopped out and ready for a beer, do yourself a favor and pop into Club de la Cerveza at the northern end! Or, even better- start there with a few beers, walk the Avenida, then come back for more when you are done! Cabs are everywhere along the avenida and only ran us $10 one way to get to and from the hotel.

Gave the beer selection a 5 as this is literally the ONLY place for better beer outside of the ubiquitous pale fizzy lagers that flood this area. The owner and his staff are passionate ambassadors that are working hard to spread the good word of better beer. Kudos to them and a big thanks for a memorable stop!
