Tips for Using the beermapping.com Beer Maps

General Googlemaps Tips:

The beermapping.com maps are being powered by Google’s awesome mapping service. The maps here should work very similarly to the maps that you will find through the regular google maps service. The zoom in and out tool is on the left top of the map. Pressing the “plus” will zoom you further into the map, pressing the “minus” will bring you further out. Selecting a spot on the map scale will bring you either in or out to that position.

Moving around the map is very simple. You can either left click and hold the map in certain positions to drag it around in the direction you want to move, or you can use the move tool up and click the arrorws in the top left. Also, clicking the button in the middle of the directional move tool, will center the map on the last location where you centered it. Clicking on the brewery names in the column on the right will also automatically move the map without zooming in or out.Centering the map. This is probably the most simple of functions. if you see something in the on the map that you would like to center on, simply double left click the map and it will automatically center on that location. Make sure you don’t actually double click on one of the “pins” or you will select that pin instead of actually centering the map.

On the bottom left of the map is a scale that alters depending on your zoom level. This gives a fairly accurate estimate of distance, if you are plotting a brewpub crawl, or simply measuring short distances.

Finding a brewery:

Knowing the state that the brewery/brewpub is located in is your first problem to tackle. Once you know which US state it is in, then you need to proceed to the US Brewery Maps page and select the region that this state happens to be in. When the map loads, you will be presented with a Google Map on the left (legend on the top left) and an alphabetical list of breweries on the right. If you can not find the brewery that you are looking for on the map, you may need to refer to the list on the right. Often, when breweries are near to one another, their locational “pins” will overlap each other, making it appear that some breweries might be missing. If you zoom all the way in, you should be able to see the breweries that might be hidden by other locational pins.

Also, remember that pressing the control button with the f key (ctrl-f) will bring up the “find” function on Internet Explorer, Opera and Firefox. And this find feature will scan the list of brewers on the right. So if you don’t want to scroll, you can simply use this functionality to access the brewery list.

Using beermapping.com’s Beer Maps in combination with Google’s Local Service:

This is a very powerful feature that is often overlooked. If you want to plan a trip centered around a brewery/brewpub visit, this tip is for you. Find the brewery that you would like to visit, center on it and zoom in fairly close. Now that you have the location centered, you can click the small “Google” icon on the bottom left of the map and it will transport you to a Google Local search page. Through this search feature, you can search for “hotels”, or “pizza” or pretty much anything in the area that you are looking at.Want to do an overnight brewery visit? This is how you can find somewhere to stay. Works like a charm.
