I probably won't be trading on BA anymore. I don't trade often enough to warrant paying for it and I've been pretty unimpressed from what I've read of the magazine.

Edit: Plus, I'm not giving money to a bunch of hypocrites I don't respect. I'd rather pay twice as much to trade here.

So you have to subscribe to use the trading features?  That isn't much different from having to be a premium member at ratebeer to use the premium features (haves/wants and buddy lists).  Obviously, BA's premium features would be more expensive per year than ratebeer's, but it sounds like the same situation.  I think BA should just make sure it is referred to as being a "premium member" of the site where one of the perks is a magazine subscription. 

Regardless, none of this really matters to me and I can't see anything but the first post in that thread so I don't know what the discussion is like.

I don't think it's the product that's bad. It's the salesman and his pitch.

I think the real beef there is the overall hypocrisy of their little venture.

Charge a subscription for the "privilege" to trade in order to "cover some costs".  Yet Toad has claimed repeatedly that subscriptions net no income at all!  What costs can be paid with no profit?  Also, in the very magazine they invite you not to subscribe because after all it's free.  The subscription is just to allow you guaranteed access to it (and to prove their ad costs are justifiable).  So what's the point?

I don't think a premium membership is the issue with most folks, it's the rather ignorant way in which the offer is presented.  Alienate those members who "add no value to the site" in order to strengthen their "community".

My two cents is that their magazine adventure is floundering and it's just a drive to increase subscriptions to increase ad revenue.  "Look at us!  People love us!  Now give us ad money!"

Can anyone else hear their ship sinking fast?....

...it's obvious that many feel quite passionate about beer trading. We'll respect this, and the fact that we kind of started this part of the beer geek culture.
