I have posted to the front page of the site where we should get a few more viewers/rss readers.
http://beermapping.com/2007/09/15/great-american-beer-festival-fantasy-league/

Since you are lazy and liable to not actually go look at the front page article, I have copied and reposted it here:

Quote
You remember those jocks that used to beat you up when they found out that you played Dungeons and Dragons back in middle school? Well, those guys are the same people that are studying statistics and drawing graphs while shuffling their team in Fantasy Football Leagues all across the nation right now.

The Managing Associates at the Beer Mapping Project felt that we shouldn’t let those guys have all the fun so we found a solution to that: GABF Fantasy League!

Basically, the premise is this: You register for the league by clicking the link on this page (this league is free - but you must already have a Beer Mapping Project forums account - click here to register).

After registration is closed, the drafting order will be randomized and posted in the forums. You will get an email notice when your turn to draft comes up and you will come back to the site as soon as possible and you will pick a brewery to be on your team. Once you pick that brewery, no one else can pick it.

As the draft proceeds, there will be fewer and fewer teams to pick from. In other words; you better make your pick count!

Scoring:
Each brewery that you pick will ultimately determine the number of points that you can accumulate.

    * If you pick a brewery that wins a gold medal in the American IPA category (or any category) you will receive 3 points.
    * A silver medal will earn you 2 points.
    * And a bronze medal will bring in 1 point to add to your total score.

These points will all be accumulated to determine a winner. But these aren’t the only points you could receive! There are five “big awards”: the Large/Mid-size/Small Breweries of the Year and the Large/Small Brewpub of the Year that could potentially earn you 5 points for each one. These big awards could potentially seal the deal if you are lucky enough to actually grab a brewery that earns one.

The goal here is solely to have fun. No money will be exchanging hands. We will have some prizes for at least first and second place, but the exact prizes have not been determined yet.

Sign up! Tell your friends! We’re only allowing at most 25 or 30 entries, so register and enter quickly before the spaces all fill up!

You know us all too well.

I can't image anything more beergeeky than fantasy GABF.

I can't wait.

So- a few questions I will pose for those of us who are Fantasy League & GABF illiterate...

  • When does registraion close?
  • We will pick just one brewery right? And do we also get to pick a brewpub or is it just one brewery or brewpub?
  • On the signup page at... http://beermapping.com/gabfselector.php ...what does the "push to do nothing" button and dropdown menu with locations do or how does it work (or does it not work at all until the registration is closed and the draft begins)?
  • What inspired all the negative vibes/copy on the signup popup window (which was funny but in a dark way)...it seemed to imply that you should forget about winning anyway.

Anyway with all jokes aside this is a cool alternative to not being able to go to YOU!  Arrgh! (let alone follow the results of) the GABF. So thanks for doing this!

Cheers! cheers! cheers!

Answered in the first post.  When we have enough people.  2 more can register at this point.

You will pick 10. Unless we decide to change that.

The "push to do nothing" button does nothing.  It is a placeholder until the draft begins.  You can feel free to keep pushing it.  It may increase your odds if you do so.

In many ways it is joking, but it is also very true for 28 of you.

Yeah!  I got it!  So who's the "Ladanian Tomlinson" consensus #1 pick?  Is it Miller?  Last year they won a ton of medals.

If Miller is LT than Flossmoor station must be Frank Gore as an up and comer that made a statement last year and now is at the top of the rankings.

Technically, registration was open for 12 days.  Sorry you missed out!

Now we just need to come up with a start date for the draft.  I also have had a couple of people mention that there might be an issue with the bonus 5 points for winning the Small Brewpub/other awards.

I'm not sure that you know what I am referring to here.  If a brewpub that fits into the "small" category wins more awards than any other brewpub then it will win the Small Brewpub of the Year title.  If this brewpub has already garnered the League member who chose it lots of points, does that member really need 5 more?  Will those extra five points make it impossible for anyone else to catch up?

It's just something to consider and no one was crying or complaining, we were just trying to make this as fair as possible which isn't easy since we haven't done this before.

I would guess starting on a Monday would work best since a lot of the people are sitting at a computer all week and not always available on weekends.

It makes sense to either wholly include or wholly exclude any categories that rely on the results of other categories (ie. small brewpub of the year). I could easy argue for the rule either way. I will say that it might make more sense to limit the game to categories that are specific to styles like categories 1 - 69 last year.
