This next release is still in “beta” and it will be getting tweaked a bit in the future. Currently we have added a new feature on our Location Lookup page. When you search for a name, state, city or zip code you will now see a link to view that search on a google map.

A search for ‘rock bottom’:

A close-up of the Map Link:

Clicking on the link on a search results page will take you to a map that will attempt to display all locations in the results from your search. There are still a few bugs, but we are working through them and have this feature fully flushed out very soon. For now, play around with it and let us know what you think in the comments here or in the forums.

The results of a mapped search for ‘rock bottom’:

Now that Oprah has made it clear that twitter is here to stay, we at the Beer Mapping Project have begun to embrace the technology!

Actually, if you’ve been following us for a while, you know we have been working on our attempts to blend Beer Mapping and the Twitter API for some time now (first mention of integration: December 05, 2007 in the forums). We’ve seen a few bugs and a few lost brain cells in trying to make everything work properly, but everything seems to be flying smooth at the moment. A list of twitter/Beer Mapping users can be found here: beermapping.com/twitter/.

If you want to read more about how we have integrated twitter, we wrote a blog post back in April of 2008 about our Twitter/Beer Mapping blend of custom maps for users. If you just want to scroll through the list of Beer Mappers that are using twitter, you can check that out here: beermapping.com/twitter/.

As always, if you have ideas or angry rants, post them in the comments or go vent in the forums. Try to avoid the all caps Oprah-like rants, or we’ll virtually mess you up!

Basically, if you are a registered user of the site, you can add events to the calendar. Each event will become it’s own discussion area in the forums, and that event can be linked to a location in The Beer Mapping Project’s database. Each registered user that is planning to attend this event will be able to “sign up” as someone planning to attend.

The beer related events are stored in the database and those events that are tied to a location will be added to a map that anyone can use.

We’ve done a massive revamp on the mapping system here that allows us to create new city maps very quickly. We have also started work on City Map Information Pages for each of the existing City Maps. These City Map Information Pages will display statistics and eventually we will have an area there where we can display information about tourist attractions or public transportation information for the city you are viewing.

For an example of a City Information Page, you can view the Chicago page here. Currently there is no space for transportation or visitor information, but we will be adding these as we find the time and the knowledge for each city to do so.

If you’re interested in seeing some of the new City Maps, you can either go to the City Maps Page or you can click one of the links to the newest maps below:

Is your beer blog boring? Are your readers suffering from some attention deficit issues? Well, have we got an offer for you! For the low low price of <s>$9.99</s> 0 dollars you can offer a bit more usability and interest to your posts with maps! Beer Maps!

We here at the Beer Mapping Project are proud to offer beer blog writers (and other beer lovers with sites) the ability to apply a proximity map to their blog or site. The process requires only a few minutes of your time if you are adding a map to a wordpress or blogger blog. And if you are running a site that isn’t in blog format, the coding process is almost as easy.

Here is a walk-through that will teach you a thing or two about how easy the process is. Or if you are daring you can simply copy and paste the code below and try to figure it out for yourselves! (I know which one I would probably do…)

<iframe src="http://beermapping.com/maps/blogproxy.php?locid=2158&d=1" width="450" height="300"></iframe>

The example map below is centered on the Rogue Public House in Portland Oregon.

The maps will have the same functionality as the map you can see above. It will allow your blog readers to be able to get directions or find out phone, address or website information for locations on the map. They also have all of the expected functionality that you would expect from google maps. Zoom in, zoom out, pan and drag are all supported functions of these maps. Play around with the one above if you are not familiar with google maps (and if you’ve never seen google maps you should check out this cool new website called wikipedia.org too!).

Just as a note: because these are using iframes the maps will likely not show up as content when your blog posts appear in an aggregator. This isn’t really a big deal, you just will need to offer some “caption text” to let the reader know that in order to see the map they will need to actually visit your site.

Finally, I got enough requests from Canadian citizens to Beer Map their fine country. Feel free to click on the image below to see the 199 Canadian breweries that are available in The Beer Mapping Project database. I have a list of 30 or more that I still need to add, so there may be some additions by the end of the week (today is Friday and I specifically didn’t say exactly whether it would be the end of the week we are currently in or the end of next week; therefore keeping my options open just in case I get distracted!).

There are currently no options for searching the database by Province. And there are no options for adding non-U.S. locations to the map. These two features are in progress. If you really want to make sure locations are added you have three options:

Register on the forums and post the location in this thread

Use our contact form located here

Or simply comment to this blog post

I will be much more likely to forget to add the location if you use the contact form, so try to stick to the other two options if possible.

If, after you have scoured the Canadian Beer Map, you still find yourself jonesing for some more beer related Canada stuff, feel free to check out these Canadian based beer blogs and resources:

A Good Beer Blog – True Story: the blog is good.

Beer Beats & Bites – Craft Beer! and some other things!

worldofbeer.com – Stephen Beaumont!

And if that weren’t enough, scroll down below the map image to read some more facts aboot Canada that I stole mercilessly from wikipedia.

Well, that’s just too bad! Because I started a New Zealand map first, due to this forum thread. New Zealanders, feel free to thank your fellow countryman, haryadoon, for his suggestion.

All you Canadians, feel free to start a thread in the forums with locations you want to see on a map and I’ll start working on Canada. I don’t like adding locations with addresses that don’t geocode, so I will likely be expecting a lot of help from those of you living there. But for now, click the image below to check out the New Zealand map! (just Breweries and Brewpubs for the moment) Hopefully it is on the positive side of the accuracy meter.

Something rotten is currently going on in Chicago. Our precious Bell’s beers are leaving Illinois, with an uncertain future return date. Here is a short write-up in the Chicagoist that details some of the trouble.

In honor of the great beers produced just east of Kalamazoo, Michigan, I have crafted up a Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Holland area map (basically a beer map of southwestern Michigan). Hopefully in the near future, I will have time to visit some of the fine Western Michigan breweries, and hopefully I will then have a chance to stock up on some Bell’s beer.

From studying the map, it appears that a great circular tour could be arranged, hitting New Holland, Founders and Bell’s Eccentric Cafe, with possibly a side track to Dark Horse or The Livery. All in all it sounds like the potential for a great beer related trip that could easily be accomplished over a long weekend.

It really will be a sad day in Illinois when I can no longer buy Bell’s Two Hearted or any of their awesome stouts (not to mention the seasonals or their “projects”!). I hope that they are able to resolve this issue sometime soon. If no solution to the issue can be found, I hope that Bell’s is able to spread their business to new states. Either way, we will continue to support them as long as they continue to do what they do best; make great beer!

An Atlanta Map is being constructed. It can be found by clicking the image in this post, or simply by clicking these three words.

This is not a completed map by any means. I have really only added non-brewery/non-brewpub locations for the city of Atlanta itself. The surrounding areas should be displaying all brewpubs and breweries, but I have not added or updated them to display beer bars, stores or homebrew shops.

As always, if you know of a place that deserves to be on a Beer Map, submit your update here.
