New Beer Mapping Features

Click on, Click off
I’ve gotten a few requests from people who are frustrated when the locational information bubbles pop up underneath the map legend, or under the lists on the right. All maps here at beermapping.com will now offer a user the opportunity to “toggle” the location list or the legend on or off (check the top right of the maps). This will allow for users with lower screen resolutions to have a bit more real estate on their monitor to see more of the actual map. Need the list? Turn it back on. The main problem that I’ve encountered with this new format is the fact that occasionally a location will be displayed underneath the list on the right. For this reason, the lists are now slightly see-through, so you can be aware of the fact that something popped up under the list. Simply drag the map, or click to toggle the list off and you can see what’s underneath. It’s like internet magic!

These map format tweaks have been tested on Opera, Firefox and Internet Explorer (Safari users, please feel free to comment). Opera does not seem to support the see-through ability. But I have also fixed the overflow/scrolling bug that the maps seemed to be suffering from in Opera. Please feel free to comment here if you find a bug or functionality issue with the maps. I can’t promise anything, but I can give it a shot!

Map Printing
Also, I’ve been alerted that printing beermapping’s maps is not a pretty sight. A little research and a few lines of code later and I think we’ve solved the printing issue. Clicking the print preview button in your browser (firefox, internet explorer and opera - tested) will show that the lists, legend and other links on the page will disappear, allowing for full screen map printing. Hopefully this fix will make it a bit easier for your trip planning. Once again, I didn’t test this with Safari, but I’ll try to check on that later this week.

Additional Print to PDF Freebie Information
You are not being charged for this tip! It is provided to you for free from your favorite site and mine; beermapping.com. Want a copy of a zoomed in section of a City Beer Map stored on your hard drive? Of course you could print screen and save it as a jpg. But jpgs are so 2005. You could also “print to pdf” with PrimoPDF. PrimoPDF is totally free and totally cool if you need to make PDFs from word documents or practically anything else you might need to print (disclaimer: I have no connection to PrimoPDF other than the fact that I use it and enjoy it). Just a handy dandy tip of the day for a free software download. Enjoy!

    Printing is not working in Firefox 1.5.0.1 (the newest version). It worked in older versions, so I don’t know exactly what the problem is. If you need to print before I figure it out, I suggest you get the “IE View” extension;
    http://ieview.mozdev.org/
    Basically this allows a user to right click on a page and open that page with IE. Internet Explorer seems to print just fine.

    Sorry! I’m working on it!
